We have partnered with Virtual Race Bags to further our ‘going green’ efforts. Participants should expect to see their Virtual Goodie Bag via email prior to the event. In the goodie bag you will find valuable information including an event guide, special offers, great deals, coupons, giveaways, and sponsor messages. But wait, there’s more! Immediately after the event, participants will also receive personalized results via email in their ‘results bag’. So watch for the Virtual Race Bag and Get Your Green On!
Greening Your Race
In 2010, we became the first Oklahoma event to receive platinum certification from the ECO, Encouraging Conservation in Oklahoma, program. ECO is a dynamic partnership between the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality. ECO offers education, certification and marketing support that engages events and businesses in best sustainable practices.
2011 will be another great year with new green elements and more opportunities for you to get involved!
This year's run will work even harder to incorporate green
actions into the event as well as offer ways for our participants and volunteers
to get involved. Over the coming weeks, we will communicate what we are doing as
a race and what you will be able to do as a participant.

Green Mission
The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon mission is to honor their memories,
celebrate life, reach for the future and unite the world in hope - with an eye
on maintaining social responsibility. We
acknowledge that making sustainable choices allows for the best quality of life
and pledge to remain environmentally conscious in our efforts. We will work to take measurable and meaningful action each year
to be better stewards of our community and environment.
What You Can Do
- Befriend the Buff. Follow The Green Buff on Twitter and Facebook. He is up-to-date on all the green happenings in Oklahoma.
- Get your acre. ECOPass is the official carbon offsetting program for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. ECOPass works directly with Oklahoma landowners who implement carbon sequestering practices on their land. $5 supports conservation practices on an acre of Oklahoma land. Get your acre today!
- Eat local. Check out great local dining options and farmers markets while you are in Oklahoma City.
- Volunteer! We love our green ambassadors. Help with recycling collection by signing up to be a green volunteer.

What We Are Doing
- Green Team in place to oversee sustainable efforts and guide future decisions.
- Online race registration - reducing paper registration forms. In 2010, 19,000 of the 22,000 registrations were online. We hope to continue to raise those numbers.
- Recycling stations during the race, Expo and Pasta Party.
- Plastic, aluminum and cardboard recycling.
- All 25 Water Stops on the race course use the city's water supply to hydrate runners - saving the use of approximately 3 tractor trailers or water gators that would have to be used to move water product on the course.
- Over 300 Porta Potties use bio-degradable deodorizer and 100% recycled toilet paper.
- Public transit and carpooling encouraged wherever possible.
- The team leaders are charged with eliminating unnecessary water and pollution at every turn.
- All discarded clothing is donated to a local shelter.
- Local homeless shelter receives leftover food from the finish lines food service stations.
- Contract transportation provide bus operations for the marathon and is committed to environmental conversation.
